The Storm

November 06, 2015

My hope is built on nothing Less
Than Jesus blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus name.
Christ alone, cornerstone
Weak made strong in the savior’s love
Through the storm you are Lord, Lord of all

These are the lyrics to a modern arrangement of the great song The Solid Rock. I have been listening to it a lot over the past year. The thing is, trouble finds us. You cannot hide from it. It is always lurking around the corner. It can be hard to trust in Jesus name when you feel like you are in sinking sand.

I was thinking the other day about the story of Jesus walking on the water. You remember it well. The disciples were out on their boat and they were wrestling with it in the midst of a raging storm. Jesus appears to them. They think at first that he is a ghost. Then Peter does something incredible. He gets out of the boat in the storm. He walks toward Jesus. The storm is still raging around him, but he has his eyes (and hope) fixated on the one person who is calm in the middle of the storm.  Then this happens:

“But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, ‘“Lord, save me!’” – Matthew 14:30

Peter took his eyes off the savior and put them on the surroundings. When this happened, he began to sink.

Our lives are a lot like that. We go along and are focusing on Christ. He gets us past some pretty scary times. Then, we realize how perilous things are getting. We take our focus off Him and look to the storm raging around us. It is at this time that we sink into hopelessness and despair.

The song says that we don’t put our trust in anything else in the storms of life. We need to focus on the one who loves us and can calm the storm. Perhaps you are in a place where the storm has raged around you a lot lately. You are scared. I urge you to look to the only one who can calm the storm and your heart. He is there. Remember how the story of Peter turned out:

“And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him.” – Matthew 14:31a

He is your cornerstone. You can trust him in the tempest. If you call to Him, He will not let you sink. I pray that today, you seek His face in the midst of the storm.
